Boeing seals huge aircraft deal with Iran

Plane maker Boeing Co has finalized a multi-billion dollar deal to supply Iran with 80 jets.

A tentative agreement was first announced in the summer and based on list prices it is worth about $16.6 billion

It is 'the first step for the renovation of the country's aviation fleet,' said Iran transport minister, Abbas Akhoundi.

The order is for 50 737 Max single-aisle jets, 15 777-300ER long-haul jets and 15 new 777X aircraft.

Airbus has an even bigger deal pending with Iran Air for more than 100 planes worth about $25 billion.

The Boeing deal could yet be blocked under the upcoming Donald Trump administration.

The President-elect is a vocal critic of the Iran nuclear deal and Republicans have criticized Boeing and other companies eyeing up trade deals with Iran.

Still, Boeing is touting the economic benefits and extra US jobs the deal will create.

"Today's agreement will support tens of thousands of US jobs directly associated with production and delivery of the 777-300ERs and nearly 100,000 US jobs in the US aerospace value stream for the full course of deliveries.

"Boeing and its more than 13,600 US supplier and vendor partners across all 50 states are proud to ensure America continues to lead in global aerospace and to create jobs and opportunities. Boeing's US supply chain currently supports more than 1.5 million US jobs."
